What is CBD?

CBD stands for Cannabidiol and it is found in the hemp and marijuana plants. While the percentage and amount varies according to the type of plant and strain, their origins lie in the same family as the more famous Marijuana element THC – or Tetrahydrocannabidiol.

CBD has become more and more popular in recent years as it becomes legal i many countries and is being used as a form of natural or holistic therapy. In some regions, it has been licensed in pharmaceutical products, where CBD has been shown to have merit in treating certain ailments and diseases.

In a nutshell CBD is an organic compound that is commonly extracted in an oil or crystalline form and is then infused into CBD Vape Liquids, Oils and other products., such as Edibles, creams, bath bombs, you name it. Read more on the history and background of CBD.

Will CBD Get Me High?

If you’re buying CBD to get you high, then sadly you are about to be let down. When you buy CBD online one of the things you won’t get is a psychoactive experience. Our CBD store online is used for those who are looking to sample the potential benefits of CBD but without the impact that THC can have on the brain. Where THC can lead to anxiety, CBD for example doesn’t. It’s these polar opposites of effects, which make CBD something that so many people are looking to buy, who wouldn’t normally consider a Cannabis product. If you want to know more about whether CBD can get you high, check out our guide here:

How does CBD work?

CBD works by engaging the body’s endocannabinoid receptors, known as CB 1 and CB 2 receptors. Yes it’s true you really do have cannabinoid receptors, in fact so do dogs too! These receptors engage your body’s own dopamine and seratonin production systems to work in a variety of different ways. If you want to see our quick guide on what CB1 and CB2 receptors are, see our video below.

CBD vs THC

CBD available for sale in the UK and the EU should contain less than 0.2% THC. This is made possible due to the extraction methods, filtering out THC and also from harvesting CBD via strains specially engineered to have a low THC content. THC is famous for being able to make the user high, while CBD is revered in natural remedy circles for it’s potential health benefits. In fact CBD has already been licensed for medicinal uses to treat MS – Multiple Sclerosis via a drug known as Sativex. This UK designed medicine obviously wouldn’t have been approved if the content was rich in THC.

CBD vs Hemp

Hemp is a variety of the Cannabis plant, which is used for it’s fibres and it’s seed, while CBD is a compound found in Hemp which is used for it’s perceived medicinal properties.

The main thing to look out for when buying CBD or hemp is the actual amount of CBD. Hemp oil is generally made from hemp paste, which may contain around 10% CBD. So if you see a bottle of hemp oil stating 1000mg, this means 1000mg of hemp and not CBD. The real figure of CBD in the bottle, may be anything from 100mg down to ZERO.

Whereas when you buy CBD oil, the mg amount on the side is the amount of CBD. Much confusion on this comes from sales of Hemp oil on sites such as Amazon which prohibit the sale of CBD oil. Companies instead mark their products in a way that makes them appear to be CBD at a steal of a price, but they are in fact simply hemp oil.

What are the Health Benefits of CBD?

The benefits of CBD are frequently mentioned in the media and while some still require more research, there are others that have moved on to receiving medical licensing. Which suggests there is more potential down the line. Check out our full guide on what the benefits may be:

Can CBD Help with Pain?

According to a study by the European Journal of Pain and reported by Harvard’s own healthcare blog, CBD offers the potential to treat different types of chronic pain. The tests involved topically applied cannabidiol, which suggests creams and other balms could lower pain and inflammation associated with Arthritis. This information is mentioned on the Arthritis.org own site also, but importantly makes it clear that these tests were not conducted on humans, but animals who share the same endocannabinoid system as humans.

Anecdotally (Fancy word for – people say) many regular shoppers in our stores and worldwide continue to buy CBD products for the relief they believe it is offering them, and particularly where they would prefer to avoid long term use of NSAIDs such as Ibuprofen. The long term use of that has been linked to Kidney Cancers. (Editor’s note – my mother died of Kidney Cancer and had been taking NSAIDs for about 30 years daily, because a Doctor once said it would help with pain from trapped nerves. When we looked at one of the linked causes of her variation of Cancer, there was a huge prevalence of Ibuprofen consumption among those who acquire it. Suffice to say, if you can find less toxic ways to relieve pain, then it’s worth a go. Providing of course it’s safe.)

We put together two guides that may be of interest if CBD Vape is your focus. A benefits and a side effects post. Why not check them out below:

Can CBD help with Anxiety?

Serotonin is a neurotransmitter found in the human body that affects our mood. Studies have found that those with low levels of Serotonin are more likely to experience mental health issues such as depression. While depression and anxiety can be controlled through medicinally prescribed Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors or SSRI, studies reported by the National Institute on Drug Abuse found the potential to treat General Anxiety Disorder through CBD.

General Anxiety Disorder is of course not the only type of anxiety and others such as PTSD – Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder and Anxiety Induced Insomnia may also be assisted through careful use of CBD products. Frontiers in Neuroscience a brain focused science journal reported a study from two Brazilian Universities that concluded there were potential signs of CBD as a treatment to PTSD with lower toxic impacts.

All in all the future looks bright when it comes to the growing interest in CBD from a science perspective. For a long time,Cannabis products were painted with the snake oil image, but as these studies illustrate, there is a growing body of evidence to suggest the claims may be true. More research will need to be done before we know the full scope of the benefits and any side effects, but the answer at this stage is early results indicate CBD can help with anxiety disorders.

What is the best CBD to take?

Deciding on what is the best CBD to take is often down to personal preference. If you don’t smoke or use a vape pen, you are best avoiding that method entirely. This is because it can get you into the habit of hand to mouth which may lead you to looking at nicotine based liquids and then collecting an entirely avoidable new habit. For those customers we recommend looking at CBD oil or topical creams as the best CBD to take. If you want to get an idea of what is the best CBD in each category then you can simply select the sort by field to ‘best-selling’.

CBD Vape is considered to be more bio-available than oils, which means, it reaches the blood stream quicker due to access to the lung capillaries. This doesn’t however mean it offers a better overall effect. Tests by the University of Turin have shown that oral taken CBD has around 20% bioavailability, while vaporised up to 60%. Many trials have used transdermal patches which show around 40%.

Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference. If you want CBD from chocolate covered praline – then that sounds a very good way to take your dose.

If you want an idea of what is the best CBD vape pen to start with, check out our guide to help you on your way:

What dose CBD to take?

If you are looking to find out more on what dose CBD to take, we have a helpful dosage calculator you should check out. While it is geared up to CBD oil, it still produces you a daily mg suggested amount depending on your weight and severity of need. So it’s just as useful for CBD vape, or CBD edibles as it is for oils.

Fact Check – we took data from medically approved sites to put the calculator together, ensuring we were giving the most up to date information as possible, when made. Why not give it ago and see what dose CBD you might need:

Is CBD legal to buy?

Yes in the UK and most of the European Union, CBD is generally legal for sale. Providing the content of the product has less than 0.2% THC and is considered to be ‘processed’ then it can be bought and sold. There are some anomalies to this, or exceptions, one of those being CBD flower which is illegal to sell or considered stuck in a no-mans land of legal and illegal depending on which laws take precedence. We have covered this topic in more detail in our “Is CBD Flower Legal in the UK” guide.

Just as CBD flower continues to confuse confusion over the legality of it, THC is a lot more clear cut. We can’t sell you THC vape oil I am afraid, but we do stock a range of accessories that make when you do, a bit more fun.

Can CBD help with sleep?

One of the leading causes of insomnia is anxiety – this according to the National Health Service in the UK. In fact on their list of causes of insomnia, anxiety is the first entry. As mentioned earlier, studies have shown promising signs that CBD can help to alleviate anxiety through it’s serotonin enhancing effect.

The view is, that if CBD can help deal with anxiety, then in turn it can help deal with the leading cause of insomnia and sleep deprivation. This could also have further benefits on dietary control and blood pressure levels. Lack of sleep is highlighted as a problem point for both these issues. Weight gain from a lack of sleep according to SleepDoctor.com is due to the reduction in the hormone Leptin which controls appetite and the opposite effect, the increase in Ghrelin which boosts it. This means weight gain is a very real side effect of insomnia.

Can I drive and take CBD?

At this point there has been no indication that taking CBD should result in a danger to operate a vehicle. But with any new substance you take, it doesn’t hurt to proceed with caution and use it toward the end of the day first. This will ensure it has no noticeable side effects with you, such as drowsiness or nausea.

As CBD is non-psychoactive there is of course no reason why it would interfere with driving. This is different however to medicinal Cannabis products which are psycho-tropic and should be taken with caution. In short, don’t take THC and drive. CBD on the other hand, you’re good to go.

How do I know I can trust what CBD I buy?

In order to be confident when you buy CBD oil, make sure it’s from a reputable company, check their Trustpilot or review platform scores, the usual. But also ensure they are visible with their company contact and registration details on their website. It is a legal requirement in the UK to list your Ltd company details where they can be seen. If you are unable to see this on the homepage, you are free to request why under the Companies Act UK. Anything at all that seems unclear on here, just ask. We put our faces to our content, that’s me the founder in the videos and you’ll find me on the webchat often too.

To us customer service is more than just a catchphrase, it’s why we answer webchats at close to midnight on a Sunday while at home watching Netflix. Yes, behind the corporate brand are real people, who are an independant family run business and we are proud of that local shop ethos too.

Can I use Paypal to Buy CBD

Paypal sadly do not routinely allow the sale of CBD items with their payment service. Where they have approved it, such as in our case in 2017, it was then subsequently withdrawn as they still have concerns with the impact on them as a payment provider for products which are in some countries illegal. This means many online CBD stores, have been able to use Paypal one day, and then lose the ability the next. In 2019 we took Paypal to the UK Financial Ombudsman and were ruled in our favour, for unnecessary retention of funds. You can see the decision document in our favour here.

While we do not take Paypal we do offer AMEX, Visa and Mastercard, with all payments managed securely by Sage and First Data in the UK. This ensures secure payments, where all customers are protected under standard online consumer regulations within the UK and EU.
