 Is Second-hand Vapour Dangerous?

Will breathing in second-hand vapour cause illness?

Becky Spencer-Davies, 20/05/2019

There are lots of myths around vaping. One of the common questions we are asked is whether second hand vapour is dangerous. We know that second hand cigarette smoke is harmful to those around us, so it is no surprise that this is asked. While vape devices do produce cloud it is very different to a puff of smoke from a cigarette, pipe or rollie.

What is in second-hand tobacco smoke?

Secondhand cigarette smoke contains the same chemicals as the smoker would inhale. These include nicotine, carbon monoxide, benzene, formaldehyde, cyanide and a whole host of cancer causing chemicals. Even though the effects of the chemicals are reduced, they are still toxic.

When breathing in secondhand smoke children can suffer with conditions such as ear infections, respiratory problems and infections as well as a risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). In adults secondhand smoke can be the cause of heart disease and lung cancer, stroke among other issues.

Is second hand vapour dangerous?

Vape juice is made of nicotine, propylene glycol and vegetable glycerine (PG and VG). There is no side stream vapour from an e-cig, unlike a cigarette. Public Health England reviewed that there have been no identified health risks of passive vaping to the health of bystanders. However, people with asthma and other respiratory conditions may be sensitive to it, just as they are with pollen and other environmental factors. So it is always best to be courteous.

Public Health England share some of their myths about vaping in a blog.

If second hand vape isn’t dangerous why can’t I vape everywhere?

Some places it just wouldn’t be appropriate to vape. Take a plane for example. Someone sees a huge puff of vapour coming from the front seats where you are happily puffing away at your sub ohm device. It will probably cause some disruption and panic!

You also have to remember that not everyone is a vaper. They might not get it. To keep people happy and the peace is generally a good reason to prevent people from vaping everywhere.

Be a courteous vaper...

You don’t want to give vaping a bad rep. Make sure that you check whether you are allowed to vape in places before you fire up. Also if you have a sub ohm, cloud blowing beast, then in public spaces, such as bars, try keeping cloud to a minimum. You might even look at getting a more basic pod kit such as the Lost Vapes Orion kit for discreet vaping.
