How to Manage Cravings for Cigarettes

Deciding to quit smoking is a pretty big deal. It means you are one step closer to giving up the cigarettes for good and leading a healthier lifestyle. One thing you might be concerned about when quitting is how to manage cravings for cigarettes. 

You don’t want to become a nightmare to be around during the quitting smoking period, you need to find a way to manage your cravings to help you quit for good. Thankfully there are a few ways to curb nicotine cravings. In this blog we share a few ideas to help you keep your mind off of the cigarettes.

KEEP YOURSELF BUSY

When a craving for a cigarette hits try keeping your mouth busy with gum, hard boiled sweets, or maybe a hot drink or some water. A great way to keep your mouth busy by replicating smoking is to use a vape device. This keeps both your hands and mouth busy, and allows you to keep up the act of smoking, without any of the harmful chemicals. 

GET ACTIVE

Just a short burst of exercise can help reduce cravings and boost your energy. Try lacing up your jogging shoes, going to the gym, out for a walk or even run up and down the stairs a few times to get your heart rate up and the endorphins rushing. Getting a fitter will go hand in hand with your new healthy lifestyle too! 

START A NEW ROUTINE 

If you always had a ciggie on the walk to work try switching up your route or riding a bike instead. This will help you to remove the association with your walk to work with a smoke. If you always have a 11am coffee and fag break, try going for a short walk at a slightly different time to mix up your routine.  

REMEMBER WHY YOU'RE QUITTING

When a craving comes knocking remember why you are trying to quit smoking. Maybe it is for financial reasons, because you're fed up of the smell or more importantly for your health. Write down your reasons somewhere where you can re read them when you have a weak moment.

WEAN YOURSELF OFF NICOTINE GRADUALLY 

If you’re not ready to go cold turkey then try gradually reducing your nicotine intake, this can be done using patches, gum or vape devices. If you decide vaping to quit smoking is right for you then you will be able to move from 18mg right down to 0mg as time goes on.
