Brief History of CBD

History of CBD

Where did CBD come from, what’s it’s history?

Cannabis is a flowering plant that has been known for recreational and medical uses.

Cannabis has been found to work with the bodies endocannabinoid system and the results may help with pain, inflammation and other conditions. There are 113 cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant, however, the two that are most researched and well known are THC and CBD.

THC is the psychoactive component in the plant, whereas CBD acts on the same receptors as THC, without the “high”. Research has found that CBD may well be a solution to a number of conditions and ailments.

You might be hearing about CBD more than ever recently, however, it is nothing new. In fact, the first documented use of cannabis medicine goes way back to 2737BC when the Chinese Emperor Seng Nung used cannabis tea to help with memory, rheumatism, gout and malaria. Medical cannabis has been used throughout India, China and the world over for literally thousands of years.

In this blog, we are going to explore the history of CBD and look at famous people who are enjoying the benefits of the cannabinoid. We will also share information about where CBD is today and where we think it will be going.

What is CBD?

Cannabis, CBD and THC – A brief history

In the 19th century, William Osler was an advocate for the medical use of cannabis, believing that it was a treatment for migraines. Cannabis was made illegal in the UK in 1928 and put on the Dangerous Drugs Act of 1920.

However, Doctors remained able to prescribe cannabis for medical use until 1971. In 1971 the Misuse of Drugs Act made cannabis and other drugs controlled substances.

Today, doctors are not able to prescribe cannabis. This is due to the THC content, which is known to have psychoactive effects and is therefore illegal.

In 1940, American chemist, Roger Adams, isolated CBD. THC was then discovered almost 20 years later. In 1946, Dr Walter S. Loewe tested CBD on lab animals. This test proved that CBD doesn’t cause psychoactive effects like THC does.

THC research has dominated cannabis research until recently. Today CBD is getting much more attention from scientific research, though it is still in its infancy.

In 1946, the first CBD test was conducted on lab animals by Dr Walter S. Loewe. This test gave proof that CBD doesn’t cause a “high”. It doesn’t matter how much you take, CBD will not have any psychoactive effects.

The Endocannabinoid system

Cannabinoid

The endocannabinoid system is a system in the human body composed of endocannabinoids. There are two primary endocannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors are found in the brain, nervous system, organs and tissues. The CB2 receptors are mainly found on microglia.

CBD is said to work with the endocannabinoid system. Then there are two theories. One is that CBD attaches to CB1 and CB2 receptors. The other is that CBD helps the body to make the system work more effectively. However it happens, this interaction is said to be the reason why it helps with conditions such as pain and inflammation.

CBD’s Future

CBD is among the top health-related searches on Google in 2019, along with yoga, diet and e-cigs. This just goes to show that more people are interested in learning about the cannabinoid and how it may help them.

We believe that CBD is going to be big business. People are more health-conscious and don’t always want to be taking man-made meds. CBD offers a natural alternative which rarely has negative side effects

The fact that high street stores and even pet shops are stocking the cannabinoid shows to us that the interest is really growing. Not only that but also CBD infused products are always popping up. You’ll find CBD vape juices, oil drops, gummies, edibles, creams and even protein powder to name a few!
