CBD For Pets
Can CBD help your pet with their health issues?
Becky Spencer-Davies, 17/01/2019
We love our pets. In fact, in 2017 we spent £4.62 billion British pounds on our pets alone. I know that Mike the cat gets star treatment in my house, there’s no human who I’d let wake me up at 3am every morning with some demand, or someone who I’d let take up most of the bed without a fuss from me.
When our pets get sick we do everything we can to make them well again. Chicken and rice for poorly bellies, trips to the vets for broken legs and even broken nails (it costs £50 to fix a dramatic dog with a broken nail by the way). However, there are some illnesses that a trip to the vets and cuddles can’t always fix completely. Achy joints, cancer symptoms, anxiety, pain, epilepsy and seizures are a few.
This is where CBD for pets comes in. You might have heard of CBD in the human world. It is a cannabinoid, extracted from the cannabis plant and has been used for thousands of years to help treat ailments and illnesses.
CBD for pets is used to alleviate symptoms of certain illnesses, pains and diseases, both physical and mental. Here are 5 reasons why you might use CBD for pets.
1. CBD CAN HELP MANAGE YOUR PETS PAIN
We know when our pet isn’t quite right don’t we and last thing we want is for them to be in any pain.
CBD has been known to be a great painkiller for both humans and pets. Studies have found that CBD can temporarily stop the absorption of anandamide. This increase in anandamide can help to reduce pain sensations.
If your pet is suffering with a condition such as arthritis, cancer or a broken bone then CBD may be able to help.
2. CBD HAS ANTI INFLAMMATORY EFFECTS
Another way in which CBD helps manage pain is by helping to reduce inflammation.
CBD has been found to interact with CB2 receptors, inside immune cells, in turn this helps to fight inflammation.
If your pet is suffering with a condition which is due to inflammation, such as arthritis, IBS or MS, then your pet may benefit from having CBD for pets in the form of an oil or treats.
3. CBD CAN HELP WITH SITUATIONAL ANXIETY
Situational anxiety can be caused by events such as fireworks, having a busy house of visitors, thunderstorms and travel.
CBD can be used during these times to help your pet to feel calm. However, CBD cannot treat behavioural anxiety or aggression, you’ll need to send your pet to training to help with that.
4. CBD TO RELIEVE CANCER SYMPTOMS
Cancer can cause pain, loss of appetite, aches, seizures and more.
Watching your pet feeling like this can be pretty distressing. CBD could help to reduce some of these symptoms, and can even help to prevent tumours growing.
CBD is a natural remedy and can be administered easily in treats or as drops on your pets food. CBD is completely legal, even though it is derived from the cannabis plant.
4. CBD TO BOOST YOUR PETS APPETITE
If your pet is turning their nose up at food, and not just their own biscuits, but they’re not interested in what is on your plate either, then they might have lost their appetite.
CBD can help to boost their hunger levels, reduce nausea and as a result boost up their energy.
TIPS FOR BUYING AND ADMINISTERING CBD FOR PETS
You need to make sure that you are administering the correct dose of CBD to your pet so you get the benefits. Always start on a lower dose and see how they get on, you can increase it over time.
Buy your CBD from a reputable store and make sure you read and understand the ingredients. If you are unsure, ask the seller.
If you are not sure whether CBD could work for your pet then contact your vet, or a holistic vet.
